October means Halloween, and Halloween means a month for horror films. The bad news about this October is that once again, studios aren’t releasing many films in that genre. But the good news is we are instead getting a very diverse slate of films that cover many other genres. Here now is a preview for the notable movies for the upcoming month.
It all starts to laugh with…
JOKER – Joaquin Phoenix (THE MASTER, SIGNS), plays the famed Clown Prince of Crime in this standalone origin tale based on the DC Comics’ Batman villain. It co-stars Robert DeNiro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, and Brian Tryree Henry, and is directed by Todd Phillips…who is best known for directing THE HANGOVER trilogy.
LUCY IN THE SKY – Natalie Portman plays an astronaut who upon her return to Earth, begins an affair with a fellow astronaut and begins to lose her family. Loosely based on a true story, it co-stars Jon Hamm and Ellen Burstyn. It is directed by Noah Hawley, the creator of the FARGO TV series.
THE ADDAMS FAMILY – Everyone’s favorite creepy and cooky family returns in this 3D animated film, where the family struggles against the 21st century. It features the voice talents of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Snoop Dogg, Allison Janney, and Bette Midler.
GEMINI MAN – Oscar winning director Ang Lee (LIFE OF PI, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN), directs this sci-fi thriller in which an aging hitman battles a younger clone of himself. Will Smith stars as the hitman and the clone. Clive Owen and Mary Elizabeth Winstead co-star.
JEXI – Adam DeVine plays a man who becomes obsessed with his phone’s artificial intelligence personality. Rose Byrne plays the voice of the A.I., and she is joined by Alexandra Shipp, Michael Pena, and Wanda Sykes.
JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT – Kevin Smith (CLERKS), brings his two most popular characters back for another adventure, with the two stoners Jay (Jason Mewes), and Silent Bob (Smith), travelling across the country in an attempt to stop a reboot of their film characters being made.
JOJO RABBIT – Taika Waititi (THOR: RAGNORAK), directs and stars in this comedy in which a Hitler youth finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic. Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell co-star.
MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL – Angelina Jolie reprises her role as the famed Disney villain in this sequel to the 2014 film. Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Chiwetel Ejiofor co-star.
THE LIGHTHOUSE – Two lighthouse keepers (Willem Dafoe, Robert Pattinson), begin to lose their sanity in their solitude. Filmed in glorious black-and-white, it is directed by Robert Eggers (THE WITCH).
ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP – Ruben Fleischer returns to direct this sequel to his 2009 horror-comedy smash, which sees his returning survivors (Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin), travel to the heartland to avoid the evolving zombies.
BLACK AND BLUE – In this cop drama, a rookie cop captures her partner committing a murder on her body-cam. It stars Naomie Harris (MOONLIGHT), along with Tyrese Gibson, Frank Grillo, and Mike Colter (TV’s LUKE CAGE).
COUNTDOWN – In this horror film, an app predicts the exact moment people will die.
WESTERN STARS – A documentary film on the making of Bruce Springsteen’s latest album.
THE CURRENT WAR – Benedict Cumberbatch (DR. STRANGE) plays Thomas Edison and Nicholas Hoult (TOLKIEN), plays Nikola Tesla in this portrayal of the famed rival between history’s greatest inventors. It co-stars Michael Shannon, Katherine Waterston, and Tom Holland.
