A Reel Preview: The Year in Film 2018 - Episode XI



With only two months left in the year, the avalanche of releases is about to start…with studios rolling out their awards hopefuls and fan favorites. Here are the notable films coming in the month of November. 

It all rocks in with…

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY – The long awaited, and often troubled production of the life and times of famous rock band Queen finally makes it to the big screen. Raimi Malek (TV’s MR. ROBOT), plays famed frontman Freddy Mercury. The film was partly directed by Bryan Singer (X-MEN), before leaving the project. 

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS – Another retelling of the famous story, which draws from the two novels The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and The Nutcracker Ballet.It stars Keira Knightly, Mackenzie Foy, Richard E. Grant, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman. It is directed by Lasse Hallstrom (WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE), and Joe Johnston (CAPTAIN AMERICA). 

FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD – The sequel to the 2016 HARRY POTTER spin-off/prequel film. This time, fantastic beast expert Newt (Eddie Redmayne), is recruited by a young Dumbledore (Jude Law) to help thwart the plans of the evil wizard Gridelwald (Johnny Depp). The rest of the cast includes Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, and Zoe Kravitz. David Yates returns to direct. 

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD – The final, unreleased film by the legendary Orson Welles finally sees the light of day. John Huston stars. 

OVERLORD – In this horror film which should have been released three weeks ago, a group of WWII American soldiers are dropped behind enemy lines to discover horrifying Nazi experiments. 

ROMA – Oscar winning director Alfonso Cuaron returns with this black-and-white drama which is a semi-biographical take on his own upbringing in Mexico City. 

THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS – Oscar winning directors The Coen Brothers return with this Old West anthology; six chapters presenting a different story from the wild frontier. It stars Tim Blake Nelson, Liam Neeson, James Franco, and Tom Waits. 

THE GRINCH – The beloved Dr. Seuss character sees an animated version on the big screen for the first time. Benedict Cumberbatch (DR. STRANGE, THE IMITATION GAME), provides the voice of the Christmas-stealing Grinch. 

THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB – A loose sequel to David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO from 2011, which is also an adaptation of the book of the same name. Claire Foy (THE CROWN, FIRST MAN), plays the tattooed and vengeful Lisbeth. Fede Alvarez (DON’T BREATHE), directs. 

ROBIN HOOD – The 10 millionth version of the hooded outlaw who robs from the rich and gives to the poor. Taron Egerton (KINGSMAN), plays Robin, and Jamie Foxx (RAY), plays Little John. It also stars Jamie Dorman and Ben Mendelsohn (ROGUE ONE). 

CREED II – This sequel to the 2015 ROCKY spinoff has the son of Apollo Creed (Michael B. Jordan) meeting the son of Ivan Drago (reprised by Dolph Lundgren) in the ring. Sylvester Stallone returns as Rocky. 

BOY ERASED – Joel Edgerton (WARRIOR), directs this drama about a teenager (Lucas Hedges) sent to a gay-conversion camp by his parents, played by Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. 

WIDOWS – Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen (12 YEARS A SLAVE) returns with this drama about a group of widows who attempt a heist after their criminal husbands are killed. It stars Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Farrell, Daniel Kaluuya, Robert Duvall, Liam Neeson, Jon Bernthal, and Lukas Haas. 

RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET – The sequel to the 2012 animated film. This time the video game character Ralph (once again voiced by John C. Reilly) explores the internet. The voice-cast includes Sarah Silverman, Alan Tudyk, and Gal Gadot (WONDER WOMAN). 

OUTLAW KING – Chris Pine (STAR TREK, HELL OR HIGH WATER), plays Robert the Bruce, the King of Scots after the time of William Wallace. It is directed by David Mackenzie (HELL OR HIGH WATER).
